Volunteer Update: 20th March 2020
20/03/2020 By Site Administrator

Hi all
What a difference a fortnight makes!! This volunteer update comes in a completely different set of circumstances than we could ever have envisaged. But the spirit of Scouting continues, and we are seeing examples throughout CRAI and beyond of our Scouts stepping up to the challenges ahead of us! Well done, we are so proud of our CRAIFamily.
Just as a reminder, the directive from The Scout Association is that face-to-face Scouting is temporarily suspended.
Lets keep going... online! Lets talk about Microsoft Teams!
Just because we can't meet in person, doesn't mean that everything needs to come to a stop! We are encouraging your Section teams to utilise technology to keep in touch with one another and to continue planning for your section ready for when we get the green light to get back to our halls. Even further to that, we are already seeing some examples of Section Leaders arranging online meetings for their sections. This is brilliant, and so exciting.
Here in CRAI we have an ongoing subscription to Microsoft Office 365, with every one of our volunteers, whether in roles with our young people or trustee roles, having access to the whole suite of Office 365 applications via the Office 365 portal.
We are really excited to be making more use of Microsoft Teams at the moment. This provides a platform to chat with one another, share files, video/audio call, and is a platform for video/audio conferences as well. Not only can all of our volunteers access Microsoft Teams, but there is also the ability to invite external email addresses into the video/audio conferences, and so this could be a platform that you could try out for some of your remote Scouting over the coming weeks.
Feel free to get in touch with your ADC if you want some help with setting this up, or feel free to watch our demo video here (you'll need to log in to your CRAI Scouts Office 365 account to view this).
We also have set up some 'Leaders Lounges' on Teams for you to share files and conversations with leaders across CRAI. There are Lounges for each of the 4 sections, and also one for all leaders in CRAI.
You can download teams for the following platforms: Web Version, Apple iOS, Google Android, Desktop/Laptop
New District Team Roles
Applications have beeen received for our District Youth Commissioner and ADC Inclusion roles. As you can imagine, we have had to make some changes to our plans, but are looking to set up interviews via Microsoft Teams with candidates in the coming weeks and hope to have an update for you by the next Volunteer Update.
We have decided to re-open applications for the following role:
Using this down-time to get your Mandatory Learning completed
As many of you know, we have already been making Adult Training a priority, and have beeen actively monitoring progress to ensure that all of our volunteers have the basic training that they need for their roles.
Now that many of us are self-isolating, now is the time to get this done and out of the way.
So here are the links that you will need:
  • Module 1: Essential Information (all roles other than Executive Members)
  • Module 1E: Essential information for Executive Committee Members (including GSL/Commissioners who are trustees)
  • Module 3: Tools for the Job (Section Leaders)
  • Module 4: Tools for the Job (Managers and Commissioners)
  • GDPR Awareness
And for those who have completed Module 1 more than 3 years ago, you will need to renew your training for the following 2 elements:
Don't forget to photograph/screen shot your Certificate of Completion. If you don't have a Training Adviser, send an email with your certificates to Symon Dunstan.
Activities for your Young People to do at home
As we have already alluded to, there are some amazing examples of Scouting continuing during this time, and to compliment this, our own ADCs have been putting together some resources for your Young People to continue at home. Have a look here for those resources: Beavers, Cubs 1, Cubs 2, Scouts
In addition there are some amazing 'The Great Indoors' resources that have been developed by The Scout Association, and a new ability on Online Scout Manager for your Young People to upload evidence of their badge requirements being met directly onto the OSM platmorm. This is a new feature which is being provided for all sections who hold the subscription to the Badges section of the MyScout portal.
Basingstoke East Scouts have also created an amazing resource and have made it free to access across the UK, so take a look at that here too!
Don't forget that our website ( is now the one-stop-shop for everything that you need to know about what is going on in the CRAI. We are trying to make sure that everything you need is on the website rather than you having to search through various social media platforms and emails to find what you need. If you think that something is missing or needs changing, please do let one of the District Team know.
Many thanks
CRAI Scouts
