Volunteer Update 4th December 2020
04/12/2020 By Becky Bennett-Wilding

Hi all,

It’s Becky’s turn to bring you this volunteer update and to start off our District Commissioner, Symon, has a few words.

Firstly, I would like to say a quick thank you to a few people

Dave Cook- Dave has worked tirelessly in the background over the last few months sourcing funding, applying this funding and ultimately in some cases spending this funding 😊. He was the one who applied for and processed the grant application that has allowed 12 of the 15 groups and units we have in the district to be Covid ready in relation to sanitisers when they eventually get back to F2F Scouting, He sourced £5000 and with the back up funding from the District Executive allowed groups to purchase various sanitising products to the max value of £400. Thanks to Dave and The Executive for sorting these vital supplies.

Linda Terrel- Linda took on the Badge Secretary role many years ago as a temporary badge secretary, Linda has now decided to place her last badge order and concentrate on her role as GSL and Beaver leader in Abercarn. I would like to say a massive Thanks Linda for the hard work she has done over many DCs and the way controlled the badges accounts within the district. With the news of a retiree comes the news of a new appointment, I would like to welcome Debbie Williams to the role of district badge secretary, Deb is currently GSL in Cefn fforest, she will continue to do this in tandem with her new role. Good luck Deb, you’ve got big boots to fill 😊. These changes will come into effect from January 1st 2021.

Lastly a few months ago, I thanked Ruth Morgan as she was stepping down as GSL in 7th Caerphilly, Well the day has now come that Ruth actually does step down.  I’m sure you will all join with me Thanking Ruth again for her dedication in tough times and hard work in 7th.  Ruth will be staying on for a short while supporting Beavers.  Jeanette Baker will now be the GSL at 7th. Good luck with your new role Jeanette.

As you know Leader training is paramount within The Scout Association, the ultimate aim of any leader is to gain their Wood Beads, this indicates all training within their role is completed, to get these beads is a fantastic achievement. As you will see on the image below, this is a list of all leaders who have gained their wood beads over the last few months, they should have by now received your certificates and beads.

Also, there is recognition of all the leaders who have received their long service awards, these range from 5 years to 20years, again all volunteers should have received their certificates and badges by now.    I would like to congratulate all volunteers listed on the attached sheets, your hard work and dedication to Scouting is recognised and very much appreciated THANK YOU ALL!!. I receive the certificates and awards Quarterly from Gilwell the last was received two weeks ago, if you feel you are missing any awards please drop me a line by email please.

ADC Inclusion

Over the past few weeks I have been working with Gwent Community Psychology on an exciting mental health and wellbeing project that is being specifically designed for CRAI.  We want to offer training and support to leaders on emotional wellbeing and therefore need to know if this is something that you would like us to provide.

Please could you take a few minutes to complete this survey:

This is an exciting project and the team are keen to provide you with lots of practical advice and support so please let us know how we can help you!

If you have any questions, or would like any information/help with anything inclusion related (e.g disability, LGBT+, religion etc) then please don’t hesitate to get in touch:

ADC Cubs

As we are now seeing a glimmer of light to get back to scouting face to face, I would like to hold a virtual Cub Leaders discussion around what we would like to plan for next year as a district.  I am happy to meet on a couple of occasions if this helps with people who may not be able to attend on different nights.  Please feel free to contact me  directly with any concerns or questions about returning and your plans for the year ahead.

Hi all as we slowly get back to Face to Face we need to start thinking of next years challenges. Scouts Cymru have now included a Explorers badge in their awards including the dragon award and details can be found here. please get your leaders to register.
